43RD PAST CHIEF DEVIL DOG CLIFTON WILLIAMS

I was born in Houston on Dec1st, 1936. I am 87 years old. I lived in South Texas, South Louisiana and North Louisiana before moving to a little town just outside of Bakersfield in 1948. 3 years later, we moved to Oakland, CA. I graduated from Oakland Hi School on 27 Jan 56 and joined the Marine Corps on 31 Jan 56.

I went to MCRD San Diego for boot camp then to A/1/5 1st Mar Div for 2 years. Then I went back to MCRD San Diego for 2 years. After that, I went to Minneapolis, MN. For 3 years.

After that, I was sent to MCAS El Toro, CA. For 2 Yrs. I was then sent to Iwakuni, Japan for a year and then was ordered to 26th Marines at Camp. Pendleton. My wife died suddenly and I had 3 young boys to care for. I requested a transfer and was sent to MB, Treasure Island, San Francisco. After 8 months, I was ordered to New Orleans for duty. I met my 2nd wife, Marie, there. I was then sent to Okinawa and Vietnam for all of 1969. I was then sent to NAS. Glenview, IL. for 8 months. The HQMC changed my MOS and sent me to MCB Camp Pendleton for 3 1/2 yrs. then to Iwakuni, Japan for 1 yr. I then went to MCAS Cherry Point and retired Sep 78.

On retirement, I moved to Houma, LA. For 8 years. Then to Corpus Christi for 5 years. Then to Phoenix, AZ for 3 years. I moved to Austin, Round Rock and Georgetown in 92 to have lived in Georgetown since 96.

I joined the Marine Corps League in 1980 and have been active since then. I have been Commandant of 3 different detachments and here for 7 yrs.

I worked sometime by myself at a gas station in Galveston in 1947/48. In summer of 48, moved to a little town outside of Bakersfield for 3 yrs then to Oakland, CA.

In So Cal. In picked cotton, picked up spuds and cut grapes for raisins. In Oakland, I delivered newspapers until I graduated. While in South Louisiana. My uncles had shrimp boats , trawlers and have helped sort shrimp. Caught crabs and picked up oysters.

I worked from 8 or 9 years old until I was 66. Then I n the League I served as the MODD Quartermaster for 13 years.
